Latest Bikeability course dates available to help young cyclists become safer on the roads

West Berkshire Council offers Bikeability, a national cycle training programme from the Department of Transport, designed to help your child become a more confident and safer road user.

2017 - Young cyclists on the Bikeability training course

Issued on: 6 July 2017.

Summer holiday course dates for children are now available to book. The courses are run over two consecutive days and your child must be at least aged 10 on the first day of the course.

Children who attend a Bikeability course are much more confident and therefore less likely to have an accident when cycling on the roads. A recent survey conducted by West Berkshire Spokes, on behalf of West Berkshire Council, showed that 21% of cyclists on West Berkshire's roads between 7 and 9am on week days were of school age.

Jeanette Clifford, West Berkshire Council's executive member for Transport said: 'The number of children cycling has risen over the last few years. Many children are starting to cycle to school when they reach secondary age.  Bikeability is now in its eighth year in West Berkshire and in that time has given over 11,000 young cyclists the skills and confidence to make short journeys on the road independently and safely. We are pleased to be able to offer this training free of charge to schools during term time and to be able to offer courses for West Berkshire residents during the holidays.'

There are three Bikeability levels, each designed to improve cycling skills and take trainees from the basics of balance and control, all the way to planning and making an independent journey on busier roads.

Participant's bikes must be fully roadworthy and all cyclists must wear a helmet.

Courses are available at the following venues:

Cotswold Sports Centre, Tilehurst, RG31 6SL - 24 and 25 July 2017;

Kennet Leisure Centre, Thatcham, RG19 4LJ - 31 July and 1 August, 14 and 15 August;

Northcroft Leisure Centre, Newbury, RG14 1RS - 7 and 8 August;

Willink Leisure Centre, Burghfield, RG7 3XP - 21 and 22 August.

The course costs £40 payable at the time of booking.
