West Berkshire Council is supporting Crossroads Care and Reading and West Berkshire Carers Hub at special events during Carers Week 2017 (12-18 June)

Carers Week is an annual campaign that brings organisations across the UK together to help carers in their local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. Carers are people who look after relatives or friends who, because of disability, illness or old age, cannot manage at home without help. Many people do not realise that they are carers.

By identifying carers much earlier in their caring lives and ensuring they are in contact with preventive services, we aim to reduce the likelihood of crises and carer breakdown.

There are various events taking place throughout West Berkshire during the course of the week.  These events will provide advice and information to anyone who is caring for someone who cannot manage without their help to make sure they know about financial and practical support that is available.

Reading and West Berkshire Carers Hub support people providing much needed care.  The hub also offer a range of short break accommodation, free health and well-being memberships, free training and caring support, CarerSmart benefits and discounts and carers grants.

Crossroads Care offers a support service for carers.  They offer a much needed respite service in the home when carers need a short break from their caring role to go shopping or pursue a hobby.  Crossroads care also offer a rapid response service providing care for up to 48 hours in emergencies.  Help is provided to all ages regardless of disability.

Staff from the council's Adult Social Care team will be on hand at the Crossroads Cream Tea event on Thursday 15 June in Newbury and at the Reading and West Berkshire Carers Hub stand at Sainsbury's in Newbury on Friday 16 June (event details below)

Tandra Forster, West Berkshire Council's Head of Adult Social Care said, "We are pleased to be able to support Crossroads and Reading and West Berkshire Carers Hub at their events this year. Many people who look after relatives or friends who, because of disability, illness or old age do not recognise themselves as carers. We need to identify the unknown carers and ensure that they are getting the support they need. By doing this we hope to reduce the likelihood of crises and carer breakdown. Please spread the word about these events and urge anyone who is looking after someone to come along and see what help they may be entitled to."
