West Berkshire Council

Conference to be held on Newbury Vision 2026

The Newbury Vision conference will provide an update on the vision and key projects in the town.

Newbury Vision 2026

A conference in support of the Newbury Vision 2026 will be hosted by West Berkshire Council next month.

The Newbury Vision 2026 sets out how the town will develop in the coming years in key areas such as the housing, development and regeneration, travel and tourism. It is a vision shared by the town council, BID and other partners and was developed in consultation with the local community.

The conference will provide an update on the vision and key projects in the town. This year it focuses on the regeneration taking place in the southern half of the town centre. It includes the ambitious plans to redevelop Market Street, an update on the Kennet Centre and an overview of the transport network. The full conference agenda can be read online.

The first Newbury Vision was created in 2003 and has evolved over time as key projects have been delivered. Key achievements already delivered for the local community include:

  • the development and opening of Parkway Shopping Centre
  • the pedestrianisation of Northbrook Street, Bartholomew Street and Market Place
  • the opening of the Vue cinema

Speaking about the conference Councillor Marcus Franks, Executive Member for Partnerships said: "The Newbury Vision sets out how we want Newbury to look and feel for visitors and the community that work and live in the town. Newbury is already a great, modern town and with this vision has a clear sense of its identity now and in the years ahead.

"The strength of the vision is that it has been shaped by the whole community including young people, businesses, training providers and members of the public. The Vision has already made a difference to the town and there is much more that we want to achieve. It cannot be implemented by any one organisation working in isolation and we will continue with our partners on our shared aims and ambitions. This conference will give us a chance to provide updates on some of the most important projects currently being progressed."

West Berkshire Council's Chief Executive Nick Carter, added: "Recent successes delivered by the Vision, such as pedestrianisation and Parkway, have created a much nicer environment for shopping and entertainment in the centre. We still have a Vision for the whole of the town but at this year's conference we will be focusing on all the activity going on to improve the town centres south of the canal."

The Newbury Vision 2026 Conference will be held on Thursday 4 May at The Corn Exchange in Newbury. Registration and refreshments will be available on arrival from 9.00am and it is anticipated that the Conference will conclude by 1.00pm. Local residents are invited to attend the conference but must confirm attendance in advance by calling Linda Pye on 01635 519052 or emailing lpye@westberks.gov.uk.
