Plans to build the new school have been postponed following high increases in the build costs from the appointed contractor and potential legal delays that mean that the school would not be fully ready to welcome new pupils in September 2018.

Cllr Lynne Doherty, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Education said, "While this may come as a disappointment to some, we want to ensure that the school is ready and able to provide the very best education opportunities for our children when they start their educational journey at Highwood Copse.

"We also need to balance this with our duty to spend public money wisely and are taking professional advice to re-tender the contract to deliver the school at a cost closer to the original estimate.

"We're able to accommodate the predicted pupil numbers for September 2018 and therefore have time to go through the re-tendering process. In doing this, we will continue to work with Newbury College to deliver the school by September 2019 while ensuring the very best value for money for our residents."
