Children and Young People

Rhymetimes, reading challenges and other activities for babies, children and young adults

In addition to printed books our libraries also offer audiobooks, e-books, e-audiobooks and DVDs for children.

What's on?

We have lots of activities for children which take place throughout the year. Every library holds regular rhymetimes for babies and pre-school children where you can join in with fun, interactive sing-alongs led by our friendly organisers. These are drop-in sessions, so no need to book.

We also hold regular storytimes, craft sessions and a Code Club for 9 to 11 year olds, along with special events during the school holidays. Please ask in your local library for further information or you can check a calendar of events to see what's on at your nearest branch.

Bookstart

Bookstart is a national scheme aimed at inspiring a love of books and stories in every child. Young children are given a Bookstart baby pack when they are under 12 months and a Bookstart treasure pack at 3 to 4 years old. These are usually distributed by health visitors, preschools and nurseries. If you live in West Berkshire and haven't received yours, please ask in any West Berkshire library.

Reading Challenges

Our popular Summer Reading Challenge for 4 to 11 year olds runs annually from 1 July to 30 September, with a different theme each year. We also run a Mini Challenge for younger children and a Grown-Ups2! reading challenge during the summer months.

Some of our libraries also run an ongoing reading challenge called Bookstar. Children collect stickers and certificates to encourage and recognise their reading progress. Please ask for details in your local library.

Arts Award

If you're aged between 7 and 24 and already doing the Arts Award through school or an Arts Award Centre, then we can help.  Newbury Library also collaborates with The Corn Exchange, Shaw House and West Berkshire Museum to offer the Discover-level Arts Award for children from 4 to 12 years old. Please ask at Newbury Library for details and join the fun!

Please note that pdf icon parents and carers are responsible [184kb] for their children in the library and that under 8s should be accompanied and supervised by a parent or adult carer at all times.
