The Welcome Back Business Grant scheme is a fund from West Berkshire Council to support our high streets, shopping areas and visitor economy to re-open successfully this summer. We offered businesses the chance to bid for grants of £1,000 - £10,000 to help pay for physical changes or events that will allow them to welcome additional visitors and encourage new footfall.

The scheme closed for applications on 21 June 2021.

After receiving a huge amount of interest and proposals from across the district, we have been able to offer grant funding to 26 local businesses, for a total value of £112,852.

The successful proposals range from new market stalls and expansions of markets, to new seating areas for customers, to a series of open day events and workshops. See the full list below with links to their websites.

How is this related to the Welcome Back Fund for high streets?

This grant scheme is funded directly by West Berkshire Council and it operates in parallel but separately to the Government's Welcome Back Fund for high streets, which does not permit direct grants to businesses.

Read about the Government / EU Welcome Back Fund here

What will the grants fund?

The funding can be used to pay for temporary changes that will allow businesses to welcome more guests as they reopen, or on event activities that will drive footfall. Some examples include:

  • rent or purchase of temporary additional seating, tables, gazebos, marquees and lighting to enable the use of additional indoor or outdoor space and make it more accessible
  • event activities, such as hiring equipment or space to host celebratory events
  • technological adaptations such as apps for bookings/orders

Webinar

Watch our 40-minute recording from 9 June

On Wednesday 9 June we held a webinar with a group of 38 local businesses to discuss and answer questions around the Welcome Back Business Grants.

We gave an overview of the purpose of the scheme, the essential and desirable eligibility criteria, and gave some examples of different bids. There were a lot of useful questions asked, and some clarity provided on who can apply.
