Trees and Hedgerows

Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) and management of hedges and trees

Please note that we produce a number of tree guides on topics such as dealing with dead trees, planning applications and protected trees, pruning and much more.  If you can't find the answer you're looking for in our guides, then the contact routes and other information on this page may help.

Council-owned Trees

We have a duty to ensure that trees on council land are safe.

If you have a problem with a tree situated on council-owned land, please report it to us.

Trees or Woodland protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)

To check whether a tree (or trees) are protected please see our online map or contact Customer Services.

Before doing any work to protected trees, an Application for Tree Works  should be submitted to our Planning Service.

Trees in Conservation Areas

The Conservation Areas in West Berkshire can be viewed online.

If you intend to carry out works to any tree in these areas, where the trunk is more than 75mm in diameter measured at 1.3m above ground level, an Application for Tree Works  should be submitted to our Planning Service.

Further information on trees in West Berkshire can be found in our pdf icon Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) [66kb].

Hedges and Hedgerows

If you've noticed a hedge or hedgerow that is blocking a path or road, you can report a problem with a tree or shrub online. If it's something we look after, we'll investigate. You might want to take a look at our Grass Cutting Schedules  too.

If you are intending to remove a hedge or hedgerow, please check the hedgerow regulation and management guidelines and hedgerow legislation.
You may need to submit an Application Form for Hedgerow Removal to our Planning Service and obtain permission before you start.
There are Help Notes to assist you in completing this application form.
