Outdoor sports facility development in West Berkshire

Find out about our Playing Pitch Strategy and how we are addressing requirements for future outdoor sports facility development across the district

West Berkshire Council approved its Playing Pitch Strategy in February 2020, which details the level of need for future outdoor sports facility development across the district.

The strategy and evidence base were developed using national guidance and facility insight from Sport England and governing bodies of sport, eg the Football Associationthe Rugby Football Union and the English Cricket Board.

The assessment focused on outdoor facilities for the main sports played across West Berkshire:

  1. Football
  2. Rugby Union
  3. Cricket
  4. Hockey

In line with this assessment, in early 2021 proposals for a replacement for Faraday Road Sports Ground  to be located at Newbury Rugby Club were subject to public consultation. The plans were then approved by Executive in April 2021 and a planning application will come forward shortly.  You can read more about the decision to close and replace the former ground in these FAQs.
