Nick Carter, Chief Executive of West Berkshire Council joined the team of library volunteers signing up children to the Summer Reading Challenge at Newbury Library today.

The challenge, launched on 1 July, has the theme of Space Chase; an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Children aged 4-11 years old are challenged to borrow and read any six library books before the end of September. This summer they are asked to help super space family the Rockets to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! As they read library books, they will solve clues and collect special stickers to complete their mission folder and (hopefully) find the aliens in time to save the day.

Nick Carter said:

"The theme of this year's challenge really hits the spot. We know that children are gifted with boundless imaginations that can be stimulated by reading, which allows them to create an image of characters and situations.

"What could be more appealing to a child than discarding earthly boundaries and venturing into space? The "one small step" of taking part in the Reading Challenge really could take them to "Infinity and beyond" and on a practical level stop the 'reading dip' that sometimes occurs during the school holidays.

"This year, with the support of wonderful volunteers, West Berkshire Libraries have promoted the Challenge at school assemblies across the whole district.  This is a huge accomplishment which will help children to reach their full potential in a fun way, which is a priority.

"It couldn't have been achieved without the time and effort given by the volunteers and we are extremely grateful to them for helping to spread the word and to hopefully make this our best Reading Challenge yet."

It's free to take part and there are incentives along the way, plus certificates and golden medals for all who complete the Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries nationwide.

There are still plenty of opportunities to get involved by volunteering to help run the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library over the coming months. If you are interested then please visit  www.westberks.gov.uk/volunteer or ask at your local library.
