Draft Housing Allocations Policy

Have your say on our draft Housing Allocations Policy

Background

Every local authority is required by law to have a Housing Allocations Policy which details how it will allocate social and affordable rental properties in its area.

Following the publication of our Preventing Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2020-25, as well as a number of changes to homelessness legislation, statutory guidance and regulations issued by central government, it is time to review our current Housing Allocations Policy.

How did we develop our draft Housing Allocations Policy?

In developing our draft policy, we have considered all relevant statutory legislation and guidance, as well as all recent case law relating to housing allocation policies. We have reviewed how well our current policy is helping to meet housing need in West Berkshire, and also looked to other local authorities, both neighbouring and those further afield, for areas of good practice.

Why do we want your views?

We would like to hear your views on our pdf icon draft Housing Allocations Policy [283kb], and in particular our proposal to change from a points based system to bandings, and our revised qualification criteria. A pdf icon draft Policy Summary [557kb] is also available, which covers the main points in a few pages.

The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and your feedback will be used to shape the final policy, which will be considered by elected members at the Executive meeting on 16 July 2020.

Following this meeting, a summary of the responses and the decision taken will be posted on this page, and the final policy will be published on our policies and strategies webpage.

What happens next?

Once the final policy is approved, applicants who are currently on the Housing Register will be advised when the new policy will become operational, and whether any action is required.
