Creatively Engaged

During the Covid-19 lockdown, residents living in West Berkshire Council care homes were given the opportunity to access creative activities through the Newbury College Keeping Active programme.

The initiative consisted of a range of weekly art projects that focused on different artist's style and work including Van Gogh, Vlaminck, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, the Pointillists and Banksy.

There was an excellent response by the residents who were keen to show off their creative talents during a time in which their contact with the outside world was severely restricted. The tutor, Tanya Reid, commented "I wanted to give the learners a focussed activity each week, with examples to guide them as starting points and inspiration. The heart of the initiative was addressing the wellbeing of the residents through creative engagement".

The standard of work was impressive and Tanya has curated a virtual exhibition entitled 'Creatively Engaged' to share the resident's work and inspiration with the local community.

The Keeping Active programme is supported by West Berkshire Council and delivered by Newbury College to enable residents to develop their mental health and well-being, learn new skills, improve fine motor skills and cognitive ability and mix with other residents.
