Resources to help businesses recruit local people and grow their skills

This page contains information on ways you can develop existing staff, through funding and also may help in targeting and recruiting new employees.

Advice about taking on staff

Every business needs an efficient, reliable and skilled workforce. "Business is Great" offers employment and skills advice for businesses and sets out essential information on recruiting and training staff, especially for the first time.

The Business Support Helpline can provide more advice about this service. Contact them on 0300 456 3565.

Universal Jobmatch - find a candidate

Universal Jobmatch is a free online system, created by the government, that matches candidates to jobs.
Businesses can advertise jobs and search for jobseekers whose CVs match their needs.

Elevate Me West Berkshire

West Berkshire is part of a government initiative to support young people in finding employment and training. The focus is to tackle the problem of young people in 'jobs without training' - jobs which offer little or no career progression and are often undertaken on a part-time basis.

We'll engage with both employers and young people, aged 16 to 19, to work towards improving long-term prospects for both the business and the young person in these circumstances. Our  website, Elevate Me West Berkshire,  provides a wide range of information that young people, and the businesses that employ them, may find useful.

Apprenticeships and traineeships

If you're a business taking on an apprentice for the first time, you can apply online for grants of £1500.
The grant is offered by the National Apprenticeship Service - their website also offers further information on apprenticeships and traineeships, along with details about the latest vacancies.

Local providers of apprenticeship training include Newbury College and the West Berkshire Training Consortium - if you're thinking of employing an apprentice, contact them to see if they can help.

Business mentoring and work placements

The West Berkshire Education Business Partnership is a key organisation working with employers and schools to find work placements for young people. If your business is interested in offering work placements, please contact them directly
