Housing Grants and Loans Policy

This policy focus on helping vulnerable people to have decent homes

Government policy states that everyone should have the opportunity of living in a "decent home".
The Decent Homes Standard contains four broad criteria to measure what a "decent home" is.
It states that a property should:

  • be above the legal minimum standard for housing
  • be in a reasonable state of repair
  • have reasonable modern facilities (such as kitchens and bathrooms) and services
  • provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort (effective insulation and efficient heating)

Failing one of these four criteria would class a property as "non-decent".

Our policy

West Berkshire Council adopted a pdf icon Housing Grants and Loans Policy [763kb] in 2021.

The policy explains the housing grants and loans that are available to West Berkshire residents. These grants and loans are there to help residents with the costs of adaptations, essential repairs and home improvements.
The policy also supports the aims of our Housing Strategy 2020-2036 to improve health and wellbeing by tacking poor housing conditions.
