Roadworks
Information about planned or current roadworks
Roadworks happen either as a result of work we're carrying out as part of a scheduled programme to repair, maintain or improve our roads, or because another agency or organisation is carrying out installation or maintenance (for instance, on pipes or cabling).
There are three ways to find information about roadworks.
If you want to know about:
- roadworks already underway, you can check our interactive map of all current roadworks in West Berkshire, with full details of the agencies involved
- our schedule for maintenance - our Road Maintenance Programme lists current and future resurfacing work planned for our roads carried out on behalf of West Berkshire Council - the page also has information for residents who might be affected
- how we're improving our roads, check our Road Improvement Schemes, which includes details of new projects already underway or planned for the future
Report a problem
If you wish to report potholes, or highlight other non-emergency problems related to roads or utility works, please do so using our report a problem service.
Our duty and responsibilities
With the exceptions of the M4 Motorway and A34 Trunk Road which are maintained by the Highways Agency, West Berkshire Council is responsible for maintaining all the adopted roads and pavements in the district.
Under the Highways Act 1980 we have a duty to maintain our local road network in a safe and usable condition. We follow national guidelines and standards by carrying out routine safety inspections on roads in our area.
If safety issues are found or reported, for example potholes, we will aim to make these safe within 24 hours.
In addition to the routine safety inspection, we carry out more extensive repairs in order to improve the condition of the local road network. These works include resurfacing and surface dressing.
The cleansing of highway gullys (drains) is performed routinely based on the risk of blockage.
