Affordable Housing

Making sure low-cost, shared ownership and supported housing are available in our district

We want to make sure that there are a mix of affordable housing options for people in West Berkshire.  This includes properties to rent from housing associations, low-cost or shared ownership options, as well as providing supported housing for more vulnerable members of the community.

Renting from a Housing Association

We no longer directly provide new housing for rent, but we work closely with other organisations, especially housing associations, enabling them to build new homes.  Homechoice manage the common housing register of people who need social rented accommodation - you can apply on the Homechoice website to be added to the register.

Shared or low-cost ownership

Our First Step, Next Step Scheme can support first-time buyers in getting on the housing ladder, and our Rural Affordable Housing page contains information about affordable housing in rural communities.  We also offer advice on Shared Ownership.

Supported housing

Adult Social Care can also offer help and advice in in receiving care at home and also finding a care home.
They can also give advice on Extra Care Housing Schemes that can help the most vulnerable people in our community.

Grants for home adaptations for disabled people are available - contact the Housing Strategy Team to discuss.

Planning and Sustainable Development

The Housing Strategy Team work with housing associations, developers, landowners and the Homes and Communities Agency to secure the sites and the funding for new affordable housing within the district.
Detailed advice for developers and landowners on affordable housing can be found on the Delivering Investment from Sustainable Development Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) area of the site.
