West Berkshire has an eggstraordinary array of independent shops selling eggactly what you need to enjoy the Easter Bank Holiday, including chocolate eggs, delicious food, chocolate bunnies, gifts that are too nice to give away, and chocolates.

To help you to choose a fabulous Easter holiday meal, gifts for well-behaved children, of all ages, and to get you thinking about mouth-watering options for Sunday lunch, here are a handful of ideas provided by local residents.

If you are looking for ways to keep the children entertained during the school holidays, there's bound to be a local business to help you with that too.

Show local businesses some love by supporting them through the lockdown - and as they reopen.

Hungerford Book Shop


If you like the idea of a book subscription, choose a 'Book for All Seasons' package from the Hungerford Book Shop. Give someone a paperback a month - handpicked and delivered to their door. Shop for the latest collection of clothes for spring, shoes, jewellery and gift-boxed toiletries. When I can't decide what to buy for someone else, I go for the safe option - a gift voucher. Blue Beetle Ceramics


Blue Beetle Ceramics delivers Easter baskets filled with fluffy bunny ears, ceramics and paints - and other interesting things to amuse and entertain your Easter bunnies. Get in quick as they're hopping off the shelves! New additions have been added to their paint at home, pottery collection - customisable to your child's requirements - whether they are young, a bit older, or actually very old indeed! Paint at home then take them to the shop to be fired - and collect a week later.

Ugly Duckling - pottery painting


In need of a creative outlet for your Easter chicks or a gift for a grown up to help them de-stress? Buy them a pottery painting kit from The Ugly Duckling. Usually you get creative and personalise a piece of pottery in the shop - whilst having a coffee fix at the same time. For eggstra delicious special occasion sandwiches, an après Easter egg hunt snack, or to finish off a perfect meal - choose cheese from  The Pangbourne Cheese Shop  For anyone that prefers cheese to chocolate - buy them a monthly subscription so they can try out different cheeses. If you are looking for the ideal Easter gift for someone who doesn't' have a sweet tooth and would prefer a local beer - or you're looking for a nice bottle of wine to serve with lunch, the Inn at Home has a huge selection of drink related gifts, including alcohol-free options and artisan drinks from producers around Berkshire.

Tired of the same old supermarket offering? Limp spinach and meat wrapped in plastic? Fancy trying something seasonal and fresh? Then shop local. There are plenty of places selling seasonal produce. Here is one to start you off...

Cobbs Farm Shop


A great place to shop for food for your DIY Sunday lunch is Cobbs Farm Shop.  According to their website they are 'best of local' and they sell 'food with providence'. Their traditional butchery counters offer meat sourced from local farms and they grow their own vegetables and fruits. They even produce wine made with grapes from their vineyard in Hungerford.



Had enough of doing the washing up? Take a holiday - avoid dirtying your roasting tins and, at the same time, support a local eatery by ordering an eggstra fabulous takeaway lunch. Here are some suggestions - there are many, many more options available - depending on whether you are a carnivore or vegetarian, vegan or flexitarian.

The Woodspeen's world-class chef knows where the food comes from and changes the menu in line with the seasons. Enjoy Sunday lunch options that include beef from Sussex and local patridge. 

Mio Fiore


An independent restaurant serving authentic Italian food. You can order online for home delivery seven days a week, or collect in person on Friday and Saturday nights, from 5-9pm.



Mouth-watering sourdough pizzas and homemade gelato. Lusso offers takeaway service or home delivery. Burgers are on the menu too including a 'dirty burger' with yummy pulled beef and crispy pancetta. Vegetarian options available of course.

The Dundas Arms


The Dundas Arms currently operates a take-away menu on Friday and Saturday nights. Alternatively, you can choose to buy a gift from a range of gift packages and vouchers to use when lockdown is lifted.

Ibex Inn

Chaddleworth Village

Ibex Inn has a special Easter Sunday roast menu - choose from lamb, beef, chicken or a hazelnut and mushroom roast slice. Cote de boeuf is also on the menu - serves four and needs to be ordered 48 hours in advance. You can collect or opt for delivery locally (£2.50 charge).

The Vineyard

This unique hotel offers world-class cuisine, made from local, seasonal produce. A great selection of wines are available, and the hotel rooms are elegant and luxurious. Purchase gift vouchers now for spa days, massages and treatments, and afternoon teas, when it reopens. Alfresco dining will resume from 12 April. There are a range of packages to choose from, some include accommodation and meals.

The Three Swans in Hungerford


Housed in a historic building, this hotel has 25 bedrooms, a restaurant, bar and coffee lounge, and a very cosy snug. Plan for the future by purchasing a gift voucher  instead of Easter eggs. Vouchers start at £15 or choose the value of a voucher to suit your pocket. Now that spring is in the air you can look forward to afternoon tea for two with champagne, for £48.
