Draft Vision for West Berkshire 2036

Have your say

Background

West Berkshire is a thriving district in Southern England. It is seen as a fantastic place to live by its residents, who benefit from good educational, health and employment opportunities. It has also received, in recent years, significant investment which has allowed it to flourish as a well-connected, prosperous and desirable local economy with world-class digital infrastructure.

That isn't to say it's without its problems. Evidence suggests that these benefits are not being enjoyed by all residents across West Berkshire. There are significant inequalities in wealth, life expectancy and health as well as education and employment prospects within the district.

West Berkshire, and the world around it, is always changing. Of course, some of this is planned, but much of it is because of national and international trends and events. Regardless of how it comes about, we must be ready for it and take every opportunity to harness the best possible results for residents.

West Berkshire Vision

A number of West Berkshire organisations, working under the umbrella of the West Berkshire Health and Wellbeing Board (HWBB), have started a fresh discussion about what the district might want to look like in 2036.  pdf icon The draft West Berkshire Vision 2036 [14Mb] is the product of these discussions and contains evidence which sets out the sort of place West Berkshire is now, and the sort of place it could aspire to be. This conversation has encouraged us to focus on how the HWBB can contribute to the development of the districts existing attributes, whilst embracing the change the future brings.

It is hoped that this focus will bring about an inclusive growth, where everyone sees the advantages of our economic success in every aspect of their lives; whether it is in their health, their educational opportunities, their job prospects or their quality of life.

Accompanying the draft Vision is a pdf icon referenced evidence base [3Mb], which links every challenge or opportunity we have identified to a data source.

Why we want your views

Over the next six months the draft Vision will be shaped and amended through discussion, debate and consultation with a wide range of stakeholders from across the district, including residents, businesses and organisations. From this, a consensus will emerge as to what the people of West Berkshire would like their district to look like in 2036.

This consultation is open from 17 September to 5pm on 31 October 2018.

What happens next?

All comments will be considered and used to help shape the final Vision 2036, which will be presented to Full Council for approval on 5 March 2019 and adopted by the Health and Wellbeing Board.

The final version will then be published on the council's website.
