Issued on: 29 March 2018.

After consultation with the public, and in partnership with teams across Wokingham Borough Council and Public Protection Partnership (PPP), the pdf icon Air Quality Action Plan [804kb] has been produced in line with a statutory duty required by the Local Air Quality Management framework. It outlines the action the PPP will take to improve air quality in Wokingham Borough Council between 2017 and 2026.

Air pollution is associated with a number of adverse health impacts and can be a contributing factor in the onset of heart disease and cancer. Additionally, it particularly affects the most vulnerable in society, children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions.

Clare Lawrence, Assistant Director - Place Based Services, at Wokingham Borough Council, who sits on the Public Protection Management Board, said: 'The Environment Act 1995 introduced a system of Local Air Quality Management which requires local authorities to regularly review and assess air quality within their areas. If monitoring indicates that levels of nitrogen dioxide are at, or near specified levels, a detailed assessment must take place.

'Monitoring identified two areas in Wokingham Borough with slightly elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide, Wokingham Town Centre and Twyford Crossroads. The Council takes its responsibilities very seriously and therefore declared two Air Quality Management Areas to ensure that we can monitor and seek to improve the situation.'

She went on to say: 'The action plan addresses how the Council will work with a range of Council departments and stakeholders towards reducing the levels of nitrogen dioxide within the two Air Quality Management Areas to improve public health and the wellbeing of residents.'
