Young drivers get behind the wheel with DriveStart

If you are aged between 15 and 19 years old and want a chance to get behind the wheel, book onto West Berkshire Council's DriveStart experience day on Thursday 27 July.

2016 - DriveStart: a young driver on the course

Issued on: 18 July 2017.

The cost for the day is £20 and will be held at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Registration is at 9am for a 9:30am start and will finish at 4pm

The day offers young drivers the chance to get behind the wheel of a car for a driving session and learn some of the vital skills needed to become a safe driver.

Young Driver will be running these practical driving sessions, using their four dual controlled Skoda Citigos. Instructors from the scheme will also be giving an interactive presentation on road safety.

The days have proved really popular in the past with a whole host of other activities to take part in including a selection of interactive workshops. Run in partnership with Kwik Fit, Admiral Young Driver and Reading Football Community Trust,  these include the opportunity to learn some basic car maintenance skills; tips on buying your first car and more.

Councillor Jeanette Clifford, West Berkshire Council's member for Highways and Transport said, 'This is the fifth of these experience days we have held at the Madejski Stadium and they are proving to be extremely popular. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain some experience of what it is like to be behind the wheel. The knowledge they gain throughout the day will hopefully help form the basis of good habits and  enable them to understand the consequences, good and bad, of how they drive and how it affects themselves and other road users.'

Kim Stanton from Young Driver added: "It's always a pleasure to be involved in these events, and it's great to see councils proactively tackling the subject of young driver safety. We know that early intervention can really reduce accident rates - our past pupils are half as likely to have an accident in the first six months on the road than the average newly qualified driver. We look forward to speaking to lots of youngsters on the day, and giving them their first taste of being behind the wheel!"
