Sue Butterworth, Dementia Friendly Community Programme Officer at West Berkshire Council said, "Dementia Awareness Week is a great opportunity to spread the word on how activity and social interaction is making a real difference in helping people to live well with dementia in West Berkshire. Reminiscence is an important part of that process.  It provides mental stimulation, builds relationships and also creates a sense of belonging. It is also really empowering as everyone is an expert! The programme of events in West Berkshire for Dementia Awareness Week has been carefully put together to not only raise awareness across our communities but to also allow people to enjoy the benefits of a range of social and reminiscence opportunities at first hand."

As part of West Berkshire's work to become a Dementia Friendly Community, West Berkshire libraries hold thirty themed Reminiscence Boxes in their collection including topics such as sport, school days, household & hobbies. These can be accessed by library members at any time.  A new box on the theme of Weddings will be launched at the Newbury Corn Exchange event (details above) on 17 May. There are also regular Reminiscence Sessions at Hungerford Library.

West Berkshire Libraries also offer Books on Prescription, a special selection of books chosen by professionals for people living with Dementia. Information is available from local GP's and at all West Berkshire Libraries.
