Council to take over Birchwood Care Home
West Berkshire Council is to take over the running of the Birchwood Care Home from 1 June 2017.
Issued on: 3 January 2017
The 60 bed care home, located between Newbury and Thatcham, provides both nursing and residential care for people living with Dementia. It currently has a contract for care to be delivered by Care UK. Their contract expires in June and will not be renewed to enable the council to bring the service in house.
The council will use part of the home to provide more rehabilitation beds for patients that are ready for discharge from hospital, allowing hospital beds to be freed up while a long term placement is being arranged.
Cllr Rick Jones, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Adult Social Care said: "The council faces a constant challenge to support patients when they are discharged from hospital. The decision to invest in care provision at Birchwood will enable the Adult Social Care service to use the resource more effectively. This will have a positive impact on the lives of older people as it will relieve bed blocking, stress for their families and allow them to receive nursing care within the district."
Whilst the council continues to face a challenging financial environment, Adult Social Care is an area we are committed to investing in, now and in the future."
