Older People's Health and Wellbeing

Supporting older people in maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Guide to Keeping Healthy and Happy Cover Image

pdf icon A Guide to Keeping Health & Happy - Support when you need it [3Mb] is a booklet that's been produced to help you or your carer find more information and support if and when you need it.

The leaflet gives advice that can help prevent problems with your health from developing, and also gives information on finding care and support if problems do occur. There's a directory of useful contacts and also information on a number of ways to stay active, healthy and independent into your older years.

Our aim is for people to remain independent and well for as long as possible, and in a place of their choosing. We also want people in West Berkshire to have a greater say in how local services are provided - you can do this by contacting Healthwatch West Berkshire.

If you'd like a hard copy of this leaflet, please contact West Berkshire Council's Public Health and Wellbeing service.

West Berkshire Council services for older people

More information on some of the services in the Guide to Keeping Healthy and Happy is included on the West Berkshire Council website.

West Berkshire Council's Access for All team deal with all Adult Social Care enquiries and requests for help, including support in helping you stay in your own home and to be as independent as possible.

If you're worried about trips or falls in your home, the Activity for Health programme includes a "Steady Steps" class that can help improve confidence, balance, co-ordination and strength.  It's meant for older people who have had a fall themselves, or are at risk of doing so.  You can also find information about companies that help in preventing trips and falls and stairlifts, rails, frames and other mobility aids through the Social Care Information Point (SCIP).

Sports and Leisure

Our Sports and Leisure Centres offer reduced-price entry to swimming pools (where available) for our residents aged 60 or over.  There's swimming, aqua/aerobics, but also yoga and tea dances available at our centres.  Or for something outdoors, you could join one of our organised and led Walking for Health groups to take in some of our beautiful countryside while staying fit and healthy.
