Reference and research

All branches should be able to help with general information enquiries. Newbury Library holds our main collection of reference material: books, magazines, national and local newspapers, maps, atlases, street plans and much more.  Trained staff are on hand to help and if we can't answer your question we will try to put you in touch with someone who can.

Local studies

All West Berkshire libraries have a collection of books and other material about the history of their immediate area.  The main collection for local studies is held at Newbury Library.  This includes an extensive collection of books, historic and contemporary ordnance survey maps, the Newbury Weekly News on microfilm, complete from its first issue in 1867, West Berkshire census information, historic directories and much more.

Family history

All branches provide access to Ancestry, the world's leading online genealogy resource, as well as the British Newspaper Archive.  In addition Newbury Library  holds further material to help with family history research, including instructional books on how best to conduct your research, West Berkshire census returns on microfilm and microfiche, trade and street directories, copies and transcriptions of parish registers and back copies of our local newspaper, the Newbury Weekly News, on microfilm.
